Goldendoodle Generations

F1? F1b? F1bb? Multi-gen? What are these terms and what do they mean?

You’ve come to the right place! In this blog post I will go over everything you need to know about goldendoodle puppies and their designations.

In short, these terms refer to your puppy’s genetic makeup. An F1 goldendoodle means that their parents are a purepbred golden retriever and a purebred poodle. In Abby’s case, her parents are an AKC mini poodle and an AKC golden retriever. F1 pups are generally 50% poodle and 50% golden retrievers so most of the time with this generation you don’t really know what your puppy’s coat or hair will look like. Your puppy’s coat can range from straight, to wavy, to curly- depending on which genetics they got from their parents.

An F1b goldendoodle comes from an F1 goldendoodle being bred back to either a poodle or a golden retriever. Bred back, you get a b! Most of the time breeders will breed an F1 back to a poodle because that is the best way to ensure that puppies are low-shed, what most people want from their goldendoodle puppies. F1b’s are, generally speaking, 25% golden retriever and 75% poodle.

An F1bb is produced by breeding an F1b back to either a poodle or a golden retriever again. These dogs are mostly poodle at this point and in the case of Bruiser, our sire- he is 7.5% golden retriever and 92.5% poodle.

Now a multi-gen is a goldendoodle who has parents and grandparents who are goldendoodles. Anything that is an F1b or later bred to another F1b or later.

Thats pretty much it!
